American Iron & Metal, has an opening for an enthusiastic individual to fill the position of a Groundsmen for the Rail Team/General Labourer at our Hamilton Metal Recycling facility.
In this role, you would be responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching services working in a fast-paced environment, The ideal candidate must have a strong work ethic and great communication skills.
Roles & Responsibilities
- The incumbent works in a fast-paced team environment outdoors to provide safe and effective switching services.
- Ensuring safe operation of the locomotive and train movements.
- Complying with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by the government and AIM standards; practicing and promoting safe work habits.
- Ability to carry out specific instructions detailing a train’s route and specific movements.
- Perform switching of railcars, including coupling and uncoupling cars, and is able to lift out coupling devices.
- Signal crew members for movement of the engine or train using a radio to indicate when to start, stop, back-up, set or release air brakes.
- Have the ability to move on and off moving or stationary equipment while the train is in motion during yard switching.
- Ride moving rail cars using the ladder on the side for extended amount of periods of time.
- Must be constantly alert to changing conditions and events and take safe and responsible actions as required.
- Promptly reporting of all safety, equipment, and track problems.
- Responsible for working with other crew members in a co-operative, respectful, professional, and efficient manner to provide safe and effective switching services.
- Participating in training or company initiatives as required.
- Previous experience as a groundsmen is preferred.
- High school diploma preferred.
- Excellent teamwork skills.
- Physically fit including the ability to pull oneself up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, able to lift (50lbs+) and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches.
- Proactive with the ability to take action/assess a situation with teams safety paramount
- Be able and willing to work shift work including weekends in all weather conditions.
- Physically demanding work in an all-weather, safety sensitive environment.
